Chemically defined

A chemically defined medium is a composition in which all the ingredients are known and their exact concentration is quantified. It is made using pure components (salts, vitamins, amino acids), small molecules, and, if needed, purified proteins, hormones, and growth factors that come from recombinant sources.

The goal is to enhance research reproducibility and increase the level of control scientists have over the formulation and their cell culture. Additionally, as the components are determined and defined, this type of formulation avoids undesired (and unknown) molecule-cell or molecule-molecule interactions.
