Cell Culture Media

What is Cell Culture Media?

Just like humans need food and water to survive, so do cells. Cell culture media refers to the nutritional liquid or gel used in cell culture to “feed” the cells all of the nutritional components required for their growth and proliferation. Cell culture media is typically a combination of water, sugar, salts, buffer, and other minor elements designed to keep cells healthy and growing strong.

How is Cell Culture Media made?

In a sterile environment, balanced solutions of salts, nutrients, and other additives are dissolved in water and mixed into solution. This media is then optimized for the cell type if intended to feed by changing the concentrations of components and the pH. Afterwards, cell media is aliquoted and stored in sterile environments.

What is Cell Culture Media used for?

Cell cultured media can be used for a variety of purposes depending on the elements included and the intended goal. Most often cell culture is used to encourage healthy and stable cell growth and proliferation.
